Tiziana La Melia
Born in 1982, lives and works in Vancouver (Canada).
The installations of Tiziana La Melia, an MFA graduate from the University of Guelph (Canada), combine writing, painting, sculpture and performance to evoke feminine archetypes, teenage passions and personal narratives from the artist’s own life in a continual shift between figuration and abstraction. Steeped in poetry, this work places words and objects on the same level, regarding any kind of material as a signifier. The references that run throughout her art also testify to a process of eliminating the hierarchy of sources. From Greek tragedy to teenspeak and Gertrude Stein, the artist develops a complex poetic language that unfolds within the walls of the exhibition space as if they were blank pages to fill in.
